Sustainability
The staff at the GRCC is committed to environmentally responsible practices, and the GRCC is certified Virginia Green by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Green practices include the following:
Active recycling of paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, glass, grease, toner cartridges, batteries, newspaper and fluorescent lamps
Elimination of Styrofoam and reduction of disposables
Water-efficient practices including filters, low-flow faucet aerators, low-flow toilets and drought-resistant landscaping
Energy conservation such as fluorescent lighting, state-of-the-art HVAC and lighting energy management systems
Energy practices based on event schedules to minimize usage during non-peak times
Support of green conferences and events by providing recycling containers, walking maps and green-certified cleaning products
Replacing high-wattage lighting fixtures and installing LED bulbs where possible
This environmental commitment is actively communicated to meeting and event planners as well as visitors.
Virginia Green is a partnership among the Virginia is for Lovers initiative, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Restaurant/Lodging/Travel Association that encourages green practices throughout the tourism industry.

In 2024, we made tangible progress toward reducing waste and making it easier for guests and events to go green. Here’s a look at what we accomplished together last year:
Recycling Achievements:
5,550 lbs of single-stream materials recycled, 5,270 lbs of bailed cardboard diverted, 2,900 lbs of wooden pallets repurposed, and 45 lbs of light bulb glass safely recycled.
Sustainable Swaps:
We introduced eco-friendly changes like biodegradable concession products, reusable dishware, and bulk condiment stations to help reduce single-use waste.
Improved Guest Access:
We added new recycling bins throughout our concourses to make responsible disposal more convenient than ever.
Recycling Rate:
We’re proud to report a 59% recycling rate in 2024—and we’re just getting started!
